Embracing the Magic of Connection: A Latina-Centered Celebration of Culture, Story, and Song

As Hispanic Heritage Month draws to a close and we enter the heart of fall, it’s a powerful moment to reflect on how culture, creativity, and connection shape our lives. In this season of transition—when the air shifts, the light softens, and traditions take center stage—we're drawn to stories and sounds that remind us where we come from and invite us into something deeper.

This month’s Rhythms & Reads features two extraordinary Latina creatives whose work resonates with that exact spirit. First, The Bewitching by Silvia Moreno-Garcia is a richly atmospheric novel set in 1920s Mexico, weaving folklore, magic, and mystery into a story that feels both timeless and fiercely modern. Known for her genre-defying style and captivating female leads, Moreno-Garcia delivers another gothic gem that pulls you into a world of transformation and power.

For the soundtrack, there’s Cancionera by Natalia Lafourcade—an album recorded entirely live, in full takes, and on analog tape. Rooted in traditional Mexican music but reaching far beyond, Cancionera explores duality, imperfection, and the magic of shared creation. Lafourcade’s one-take recording process is more than just a technical choice; it’s a soulful philosophy: when we show up fully and create in community, beauty follows—even in the imperfect.

Together, these works speak to the beauty of heritage, the importance of honoring tradition while evolving forward, and the deep power of creative connection. Whether you're looking to dive into a haunting novel, explore an album filled with cultural nuance, or simply feel more grounded in this season of change—these two women offer the perfect inspiration.

And if you're local, don’t miss the final days of the Alebrijes: Keepers of the Island exhibit on Raspberry Island.

This season is full of spirit—come be part of it.
